Unity Wigs & Hair Services: Empowering Hair Care in the HRM

Founded in 2018 by Nadine Sparks, Unity Wigs & Hair Services set out to make waves in the hair care industry. With a mission to empower clients with the knowledge and skills to care for their hair, they offer a unique approach to hair care, blending education with high-quality professional products and specializing in curly hair.

We take pride in offering a wide range of top-tier products to support our clients’ hair care journeys,” Nadine said. “We are also committed to providing comprehensive solutions for those dealing with hair loss, from wigs and men’s hair units to extensions. Furthermore, they specialize in catering to a diverse range of curly hair textures, including wavy, curly, and coily hair types. But it’s more than just the services that set them apart— it’s the atmosphere. Emphasizing that her salon is designed to be a welcoming space where all clients, regardless of their hair type, feel seen and valued. “Our goal is to create a safe, inclusive environment where all hair textures are embraced and looked after.”

Nadine recently took part in the Women’s Enterprise Organizations of Canada (WEOC) National Loan program. This program offers an inclusive approach to lending and providing robust wrap-around services that sets women entrepreneurs up for continued growth and success by offering loans up to $50,000. The Centre for Women in Business is the Nova Scotia delivery partner for the WEOC loan fund.

“Getting a loan from WEOC was a breeze compared to other lending institutions. They provided clear guidance every step of the way, allowing me to rectify errors before final submission. The loans team was welcoming and caring and made the application process seamless. Nora’s readiness to address my queries was invaluable, and I was grateful for CWB’s unwavering support.”

“The funding was made available within just a few days of completing the application, alleviating much of the stress I typically associate with securing financial assistance. One of the standout features of their service was the loan calculator they provided. This tool allowed me to understand my potential repayment options clearly and straightforwardly. Additionally, they supplied templates for all the required documents, making compiling everything needed for a successful application easy. My experience with WEOC was positive, thanks to their clear communication and supportive resources.”

As a woman of colour and business owner in Halifax, Nadine has faced challenges, particularly in accessing financing. “One of the biggest hurdles has been securing financial support without a solid business plan. Unfortunately, I have encountered a concerning trend during my interactions with bankers and financial institutions; too often, I felt that they did not take me seriously solely because I am a woman of colour. This added a layer of bias influencing their willingness to engage with me and support my business aspirations, leaving me feeling undervalued and marginalized.”

The WEOC loan fund not only provides financial support but also empowers women-led businesses to thrive and grow. For Nadine, it was a big step in ensuring the continued success of Unity Wigs & Hair Services. “I wholeheartedly recommend WEOC to anyone considering a loan. Their genuine care, willingness to help, and exceptional understanding make them stand out.”
